IlivedontheMoon

Yannick Puig

Hello, I am Yannick Puig, director, designer, and animator of "I lived on the Moon". I'm glad to present you this new videoclip. I invested much of my personnal time in this work...I've tried to make an original short wich illustrate the great music of Kwoon as much as possible. I hope you will enjoy it. In this website, I will tell you about my inspirations, my creation process and you will learn details about the clip! In "I lived on the moon", a father speaks to his son. He explains how was his life on the moon. A place filled with flying snakes, fireflies and three tailed monkeys A beautiful place, safe and far away from the human culture. A place for imagination, a place in which you'll find the entrance only if you open your mind. Kwoon was interested in working with me after having seen " Krapooyo", a short I made in 2005. Krapooyo's world was very similar to Kwoon's. For this song, the deal with Kwoon was to tell the child's initiatory course, and to keep some details of Krapooyo, as the fireflies. All of theese ingredients are giving a poetic and melancholic atmosphere. Here you can see the " Krapooyo"...in a state of evolution The artwork of the CD "Tales and dreams" was all designed by Phrenologik . The music contains two parts, a rather calm part and another more rhythmed part. I thought that the first part could present the characters and history, and the action could really start at the second part when the music takes off. It begins when the bulb carrys the child in his vertiginous rise. This part immediately inspired me by its heady rhythm very present and I then thought that it would be a character with long legs who would mark the time. [Click into the picture to see the entire comic] From this idea it all started. I thought about a comic I had drawn before, which could be a good source of inspiration. This comic is 70% ideas of the musical video. It was painted in 1998...I always had the idea to pass it into animation. It tells the story of a child, traveling with his flying manta ray to discover his roots. The concept in this comic was interesting. It was to mix the world of deep sea with the world of space. Two worlds we think so different, but are very close in a lot of ways. (the atmosphere, the light, the gravity, ...stars like bubbles in the sky...) On the CD "tales and dreams" you can see jellyfish flying. the common points with the world of Kwoon and mine are incredible...So it was very pleasant to work with people who have the same dreams. For this short I used 3dsmax 8, Photoshop, and After effects ( and also plugins for particles and old film effects...).And V-ray for the renders. My methodology was at first to cut the 4min30 of the music into different parts. Like the introduction, the part when the father speaks about the Moon etc... And then I drew the story-board to help me compose plans of cameras. Click the two pictures of story board I have great love and respect for nature, which is my favorite source of inspiration. I've always been attracted by insects, plants, and mineral kingdoms. I‘m inspired by nature, I play with it, I mix it, to create worlds, for example, where the fauna and the flora are not distinct any more. A lot of artists inspired me for this piece too, like Tim Burton of course, and probably Hayao Miyazaki, but also Tibetan and Nepalese art and its interpretation of colours and nature. These two characters of the" father" and the "child" were designed like explorers. At the beginning they were like cosmonauts, it was later necessary to show their expressive eyes. But I found it interesting that their mouths do not appear. The red characters represent violence and the human madness. So I found it natural to clothe them like the Ku Klux Klan but in red, with a symbol of the sun, because in "I lived on the Moon" the child flees the sun to live his dreams at night, hidden far from the human hostility. Like a metaphoric symbol, it's the fight of the Moon against the Sun.
